Discover the Art Behind the Kimono

For centuries, Japanese artisans have used Ise Katagami—intricately hand-cut paper stencils—to create the elegant patterns seen on traditional kimono.

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to one of Japan’s nationally recognized traditional crafts through an engaging exploration of history, design, and creativity.

Participants will examine authentic stencil materials, learn how traditional stencil paper is made, and discover how generations of artisans transformed simple paper into incredibly detailed works of art. They will also have the opportunity to touch authentic kimono fabrics and observe how different stencil patterns create unique textile designs.

Using professionally designed stencil patterns and authentic Japanese materials, each participant will create a one-of-a-kind dyed pouch to take home. Because each participant chooses their own pattern placement and color combination, every finished piece is unique!

Workshop Fee Includes:

  • Authentic materials from Japan
  • Traditional stencil tools and supplies
  • A fabric pouch to dye and take home
  • An engaging cultural presentation featuring fun quizzes about the history of Ise Katagami
  • Step-by-step guidance throughout the creative process

Please note: Due to the detailed paper stencil-cutting involved, participants must be ages 12 and up.

Space is limited to 25 participants, so register soon to secure your spot!
