Destination Japan – A Japanese Language and Culture Camp for Kids

Explore Japan’s language, culture, and traditions in a one-week summer camp!

Explore the wonders of Japan in the week-long Japan-America Society Summer Camp ! This summer camp is for children (ages 8 to 12, grades 3 through 7) who are interested in learning Japanese language, daily life, and holiday customs. “I Live in Tokyo” by Mari Takabayashi will inspire our journey through Japanese traditions and holidays, month-by-month. Each day will be devoted to one or two calendar months, and campers will experience what it is like to spend those months in Japan. They will engage in language lessons, reading, writing, storytelling, and hands-on cultural activities that include anime drawing, calligraphy, origami folding, tea ceremony, sushi rolling, and more!

Through this summer camp, campers will:

  • Learn basic Japanese greetings, expressions, and vocabulary related to holidays and customs.
  • Learn and practice writing Japanese hiragana, and some katakana and kanji.
  • Understand and experience a variety of Japanese customs and traditions related to seasons and holidays.
  • Understand and experience traditional art forms, such as origami, kamishibai, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and bon dance.
  • Have a deeper understanding of the Japanese culture and cultural values by exploring Japan month-by-month from multiple perspectives.
