This workshop will be conducted via Zoom. Attendees must have a device with audio and video capabilities, as well as an internet connection. Part 1: Preparing for Your Trip – Tuesday, Nov 19th 7:30 – 8:50pm (CST) Register Here for Part 1
This session focuses on the planning and pre-departure. The goal of this session is to help you feel well-prepared for your travel to Japan by providing you with a list of items to consider before your travel. Topics include Japanese currency, transportations, essential travel items and useful online tools. Language lessons covered: self-introduction, basic greetings, counting, and multifunctional expressions.
Part 2: You’ve Arrived! – Tuesday, Nov 26th 7:30 – 8:50pm (CST) Register Here for Part 2
This session focuses on the early stage of your travel starting with the moment you arrive at the airport in Japan. The goal is to guide you through the first few hours of your arrival with some useful tips so you can feel comfortable enough to start your exciting journey. Topics include airports in Japan and the first three things to do, Japanese transportation systems, and general etiquette, such as tipping, train manners, and what to do when you are lost. Language lessons covered: purchasing tickets, asking for directions, saying no or no thank you, tipping, and other basic expressions.
Part 3: Essential Travel Etiquettes – Tuesday, Dec 3rd 7:30 – 8:50pm (CST) Register Here for Part 3
The goal of this session is to have a deeper understanding of the Japanese culture as you learn some essential travel etiquette specifically related to dining, and visiting Ryokans (traditional hotels), Onsens (Japanese hot springs), and Japanese homes. While learning some of the dos and don’ts of visiting different places in Japan, you will gain insight into Japanese traditions and social customs . You will also learn useful tips for finding places to enjoy Japanese food. Language lessons covered: essential dining expressions, ordering food, tipping at Ryokans, and visiting/leaving Japanese homes.

Instructor
Ikuko Fujiwara
Her academic and professional background is in TESOL and Composition which began with earning a Master’s degree in TESOL from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Her career has been devoted to instruction and supporting student success while promoting diversity and inclusion in educational spaces. She has experience teaching Japanese, ESOL and college composition at various colleges in the United States. She is committed to creating inclusive and meaningful learning spaces where people engage in cross-cultural/intercultural understanding and learn to use language in empowering ways.
