2023 Destination Japan – A Japanese Language and Culture Camp for Kids
Monday, June 5, 2023 | 9:00 am - Friday, June 9, 2023 | 12:30 pm
Explore Japan’s language, culture, and traditions in a one-week summer camp!
Back for our second year!
Explore the wonders of Japan in the week-long Japan-America Society Summer Camp! This summer camp is for children (ages 8 to 12, grades 3 through 7) who are interested in learning Japanese language, customs, traditions, and modern Japan. Campers will engage in language lessons, reading, writing, storytelling, and hands-on cultural activities that include anime drawing, calligraphy, origami folding, tea ceremony, sushi rolling, and more!
In one week, learn some of the oldest tales and traditions of Japan, how they are still alive and well in modern Japanese culture, and how they help to inspire ideas that benefit the entire globe. From origami being used in space stations, to folk legends being reworked into world-famous anime, each day will expand the imaginations of every camper. They will:
- Learn basic Japanese greetings, expressions, and vocabulary
- Learn and practice writing Japanese hiragana, and some katakana and kanji
- Understand and experience a variety of Japanese customs and traditions
- Understand and experience traditional art forms, such as origami, kamishibai, calligraphy, and tea ceremony
- Have a deeper understanding of Japanese culture and cultural values
- Gain knowledge of modern Japan
